Troop 628’s first Troop event a big success!

Shortly after being formed in November 2009, Troop 628 set their sites on their first Troop event—the Appalachian Trail District Klondike Derby 2010. In December we looked at sled designs and in January began to build our sled and practice scout skills for events. The Webelos I Den from our feeder Pack 628 decided to join in the fun and built sleds of their own. They claimed they would “smoke” us, and we challenged to “blaze” by them.

The big day was January 30th. Although there was no snow on the ground when we started in the morning, it soon started to snow, and we had over four inches by the end of the events. The high for the day was reported at 20 degrees.

So how did we do? Troop 628 came in 2nd overall with a combined event score of 91 points. Pack 628 came in 7th overall with 74 points (ahead of many Troops)!! In the sled race event alone,

Pack 628 did beat us, coming in 4th with us coming in 7th.

In an event wrap-up, the event organizer explained, “The big deciding factor for scores was completing stations. Of the 17 patrols competing there were only three that completed all the stations …And a close second factor was leadership. The patrols that did well were the patrols with good leadership that work well as a team. The Klondike events are designed to challenge your patrol to work as a patrol and demonstrate their mastery of scout skills.  There are no strength or endurance events (other than the sled race) so younger scouts can compete with older scouts.”

We are very proud of how well our new Troop worked together on this event, and of our future scouts in Pack 628. We had a great time!

First Place in Klondike Derby of 2012!

This Klondike Derby had absolutely no snow, but that didn't prevent our troop from going. We had three patrols from our troop participate this year, each patrol being within the top five of the boy scout troops. Our founding patrol, the Flaming Aces, got first place out of the whole camp with a score of 119 points, and got third place overall in the sled race. They even set an event record for both the log hoist and the "ski" race.
